Buses crash through I-5 barrier

A couple of charter buses with dozens of people aboard slid down the snow-covered cobblestones of Thomas Street on Capitol Hill and crashed into each other Friday morning, crashing through a guardrail on Melrose Street 20 to 30 feet above Interstate 5.

Two of three buses caravanning students with the Columbia Basin Job Corps in Moses Lake home on Christmas break from Moses Lake, all bound for Seattle's Greyhound bus station, slid down the icy street near Denny Way, coming to rest with their front ends hanging over the Interstate 5 freeway.

All passengers have been taken off the bus with mainly minor injuries and rattled nerves, though a few were taken to hospitals as a precaution, according to the Seattle Fire Department.

Firefighters believe the buses, which continued to rest above the freeway, onto which some debris fell, are stable.

The third bus in the caravan escaped the crash.

毎朝のニュースチェックで見つけたアメリカ北西部に襲った冬の嵐の記事のひとつ、シアトルで大型バス２台が凍った路面でスリップして停まれず、坂を下ったところにあるハイウェイ５のガードレールを突き破り、危うく下を走るハイウェイに落ちそうになったという記事。３台で走っていたようですが、１台は無事だったようです。写真では１台のバスしかガードレールを突き抜けていないように見えますが、実はもう１台後ろで同じように突き抜けて落ちそうになっています。この記事に出ている事故のあったThomas Streetというのはハイウェイに向けてかなりの急斜面になっており、路面がテカテカに凍ったらまず停まれないほどの角度でして、実を言うと僕はこの事故現場から３ブロックほど坂を上がったところ、まさにThomas Streetと別な通りの交差点の角に住んでいました。あまり冬に雪が降る事がないシアトルですが、サンフランシスコほどではないけど坂が多いので路面が凍ってしまうとあちこちで立ち往生してしまうクルマがたくさん出て、住んでいた当時のある日に１０センチほど積もった時には学校閉鎖や交通機関のマヒはもちろん、FMラジオ局まで沈黙してしまう事がありました（たぶんみんな帰ってしまったのか仕事に出てこられないかのどっちか）。今年は雪が少ない北海道ですが僕も運転には気をつけなくちゃ。
